Let's say I had a page on a website with a map of the world taking up the full width and almost the full height. On that map I want place-marker icons placed on certain countries. When the user hovers over these place-marker icons, I want a white box to show up with some data (text & image & a link unique to that country) - so each marker will show something different.

Is HTML image mapping still used for this in 2017? I know there's no hover over on phones & tablets but at least on desktop/laptops would this be responsive to all screen sizes? Or would it mess up the image mapping? Is the best way to go about this to just use image mapping and javascript onMouseOver functions?

I didn't find the right solution from the internet.
